Chiesa dei Santi Vito e Modesto

The church is first named as a diaconia in the life of Leo III, between the eighth and ninth centuries. Sixtus IV rebuilt it, with 1477 given for the end of the work; it was restored again in the seventeenth century and in the mid-nineteenth by Pietro Camporese il Giovane. Around 1900 Alfredo Ricci reoriented it with a new façade on via Carlo Alberto, and the restoration of the 1970s undid that and returned the main entrance to via di San Vito. Leo XII erected the parish of Santa Maria Maggiore in San Vito here on 1 November 1824, by the bull Super universam. The church stands on the site of the Macellum Liviae, the commercial complex Augustus built on the Esquiline and dedicated to Livia, of which nothing is standing.
