Chiesa di San Macuto

Roma Capitale records the church from 1192; it was under San Marcello al Corso in the later thirteenth century, then under the Dominicans of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, confirmed by Nicholas III in 1279, and was a parish church by 1422. In 1516 Leo X united the parish to the Chapter of St Peter's, which ceded it to the Confraternita dei Bergamaschi in 1539 — two separate events that are often merged into one. A new façade was built about 1560 by Giovanni Alberto de Galvani, and the church was partly rebuilt between 1577 and 1585 to Francesco Capriani da Volterra's design. The parish was suppressed in 1588. The Bergamaschi left for Santa Maria della Pietà in 1725-26 and the Jesuits took the church back under the San Macuto title; it has been part of the Collegio Bellarmino since 1942. One data caution: the map pin on Roma Capitale's own page for this church falls outside the rione its own prose gives. The prose and the building outline agree on Colonna and the pin is the outlier.
