Galleria Alberto Sordi

The covered shopping arcade on Piazza Colonna, which Roma Capitale publishes under the name Galleria Alberto Sordi (già Galleria Colonna). Roma Capitale describes it as Liberty architecture, designed by the Livornese architect Dario Carbone and inaugurated in October 1922, in the period of Rome's transformation into the capital, conceived as a multifunctional block for offices and commerce, and records that it takes its name, as Piazza Colonna does, from the Column of Marcus Aurelius.

History

Roma Capitale records that the Galleria shut for about a year and reopened in 2024 after a restoration that removed the external glazing and renewed the lighting. The arcade carried the name Galleria Colonna and was later renamed for the actor Alberto Sordi; no year is given here for the renaming, because two institutional sources give two different ones. The Italian Wikipedia article adds that the building is one of the seats of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, that the seventeenth-century palazzo Spada al Corso, later known as palazzo Piombino, stood on the site, and that the work was completed only in 1940 under Giorgio Calza Bini. This is not the Galleria Colonna in the sense of the Colonna family's picture gallery, which is a different building in a different rione.
