Church of St Mary and St Peter, Wennington

The Grade II* listing was made on 7 January 1955 as list entry 1079886, under the statutory name 'Church of St Mary and St Peter', and Havering Council names the church among the borough's historic buildings. Wennington is a ribbon of scattered houses along Wennington Road with a population of about 300, roughly 14.8 miles (23.8 km) east of Charing Cross. On 19 July 2022, during an extreme heat event, a wildfire struck the village: about 18 houses were destroyed and many more damaged, roughly 90 families were evacuated, and the London Fire Brigade sent around 15 engines and 100 firefighters. The church survived. The fire is reported to have started by spontaneous combustion in a compost heap and to have spread along garden fencing. Wennington Marshes to the south form part of the RSPB's Rainham Marshes nature reserve; the marshes run out of Havering into Thurrock, and the reserve's visitor centre and postal address are on the Thurrock side at New Tank Hill Road, Purfleet, RM19 1SZ. Four bus stops on route 372 stand within 500 m of the church: Wennington Green at 138 m and 146 m, Kent View at 149 m and Laundry Cottages at 318 m. Rainham station is about 2 km west.
