Pier 43 Ferry Arch

A steel arch and headhouse standing on the shore at Pier 43. The headhouse was a decorated hoisting tower, built to lift rail cars on and off the ferries that carried freight across the bay.
History
The arch opened in 1914, built to serve the Belt Railroad. The wooden pier behind it was replaced in 1996. The headhouse was damaged by fire in 1998 and rehabilitated between 2002 and 2003 to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards.
