Garrick's Temple to Shakespeare

The actor-manager David Garrick erected the garden folly in 1756 on the north bank of the Thames at Hampton to honour Shakespeare, used it to house his collection of Shakespearean relics and entertained family and guests in it. It came into public ownership in the 1930s, fell into serious disrepair by the end of the twentieth century and was restored in the late 1990s with National Lottery funding after a campaign supported by leading actors. It now runs as a museum and memorial to Garrick's life and career. Garrick's Villa across the road, about 70 m away, is separately Grade I listed, NHLE 1193477, and its grounds are a Grade II registered park and garden, NHLE 1000805. Routes 111, 216 and R68 serve Hampton.
