Hammersmith Bridge carries Hammersmith Bridge Road across the Thames. The council gives its build date as 1887 and describes it as wood and wrought iron with the suspension held by cast iron pedestals. It is listed Grade II*, NHLE 1079819. It carries pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair and e-scooter users, and motor vehicles remain excluded.
History
The bridge was fully closed in 2020 on public safety grounds after micro-fractures were identified in the structure. It reopened in 2021 to pedestrians, cyclists and river traffic once a temperature control monitoring system had been introduced. The main carriageway reopened in April 2025 after a GBP 2.9 million redecking, and carries three lanes: northbound cyclists, southbound cyclists and a two-way pedestrian path. The council and the Department for Transport are considering options for the bridge's long-term future.
