Hammersmith and Fulham: Fulham Palace, the Arts and Crafts houses at Hammersmith and five working venues

Hammersmith is a road interchange with two Underground stations 156 metres apart under it, and two minutes south of the traffic the Thames runs past a Georgian terrace in three named stretches: Lower Mall, Upper Mall and Hammersmith Terrace. Kelmscott House at 26 Upper Mall is listed Grade II, NHLE 1193040, and holds the William Morris Society's museum and shop, open every Thursday to Sunday 10am to 4pm. The venue is cashless. The terrace around it is protected in its own right: 13 and 15 Upper Mall are listed Grade II, NHLE 1079782, and 22 and 24 Grade II, NHLE 1079784.

Emery Walker's House at 7 Hammersmith Terrace is listed Grade II* in its own right, NHLE 1079821, and the rest of the terrace, 1A, 1 to 6 and 8 to 16, is listed Grade II, NHLE 1192091. Entry is by pre-booked guided tour only. For the March to November 2026 season the house opens twice a week, Thursdays and Saturdays at 11am and 1pm, with select Saturdays offering an additional 3pm slot; tours run approximately an hour and a half, and tickets must be pre-booked and are non-refundable, with no exchanges. The operator's own sections cover the wallpaper, the Islamic collection and the archive alongside the dining room, drawing room, bedroom, conservatory and garden.

Hammersmith Bridge is listed Grade II*, NHLE 1079819. The council gives its build date as 1887 and describes it as wood and wrought iron with the suspension held by cast iron pedestals. It was fully closed in 2020 on public safety grounds after micro-fractures were identified in the structure, reopened in 2021 to pedestrians, cyclists and river traffic once a temperature control monitoring system had been introduced, and had its main carriageway reopened in April 2025 after a GBP 2.9 million redecking. The carriageway now carries three lanes: northbound cyclists, southbound cyclists and a two-way pedestrian path. Motor vehicles are still excluded, and the council and the Department for Transport are considering options for the bridge's long-term future.

Three venues work within a few hundred metres of the two Hammersmith stations. The Eventim Apollo at 45 Queen Caroline Street is listed Grade II* on the National Heritage List as the former Odeon Cinema, NHLE 1252993, and Wikidata records a capacity of 5,039; it stands 334 metres north of Riverside Studios and 420 metres north of Hammersmith Bridge. Riverside Studios at 101 Queen Caroline Street sits on the water immediately upstream of the bridge, and its bakery opens 9.00 to 16.00, its bar and kitchen 10:00 to 23:00 daily with breakfast bites until 12:00 and the kitchen closing at 21:00, and its box office 9.00 to 21.00. The Lyric Hammersmith Theatre stands on Lyric Square off King Street, with a box office open 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and offices 10am to 6pm Monday to Friday; bar and box office are cashless, and the theatre refers on its own site to "our 130 year old auditorium".

The Thames bends at Putney Bridge, and five of the borough's set pieces stand on that bend in one continuous walk: Fulham Palace, Bishop's Park, All Saints, Sir William Powell's Almshouses and Craven Cottage. Fulham Palace on Bishop's Avenue was the moated house of the Bishops of London, and the National Heritage List records one Grade I entry inside the borough boundary: this building, NHLE 1286903. Three separate designations attach to the site, and they are different kinds of thing. The building is Grade I. The grounds are a registered park and garden, Grade II*, NHLE 1000133, covering 15.24 hectares. The moated site is a scheduled monument, NHLE 1001964, which carries no grade at all. The moat bridge and its attached gate piers are listed separately, Grade II, NHLE 1358584, and a lodge to the north east of the entrance drive, with the moat bridge, is listed Grade II, NHLE 1253047. Admission is free, and the operator states that museum visits require booking a free timeslot in advance. The Museum and Historic Rooms open 10.30 to 17.00 with last entry at 16.30, the Walled Garden 10.15 to 16.15, the botanic garden grounds 07.00 to 18.00 and the cafe 9.30 to 17.00. OpenStreetMap records a veteran oak in the grounds, the Fulham Palace Oak, tagged with a start date of about 1500.

Bishop's Park runs along the Thames between Putney Bridge and Fulham Palace. It is a registered park and garden, Grade II, NHLE 1001677, covering 9.02 hectares, and a Green Flag site. The council describes it as one of two parks in the borough on the register of parks and gardens of special historic interest, names the Moat Garden, Pryor's Bank Garden, a Rose Garden, the Spanish War Memorial Garden, an ornamental lake, Fielder's and Bishops Meadow and a Thames Path river walk among its features, and states that the park is locked at night without publishing fixed times, so none are given here.

All Saints stands at the Putney Bridge end of Bishop's Park, 357 metres downstream of Fulham Palace on the two National Heritage List points, and is listed Grade II, NHLE 1286566, entered as PARISH CHURCH OF ALL SAINTS. Its churchyard holds monuments listed in their own right, among them the tomb of Bishop Robert Lowth due east of the vestry, Grade II, NHLE 1079801. On Church Gate beside the churchyard, Sir William Powell's Almshouses are listed Grade II, NHLE 1079809, one of 27 Grade II* entries inside the borough boundary; the entry names the almshouses together with their gate piers, railings and gates to the west. They are occupied homes, so the interest is the street frontage rather than an interior visit, and no source states opening hours for either the church or the almshouses, so none are given here.

Craven Cottage, the ground of Fulham Football Club on Stevenage Road, backs onto Bishop's Park. OpenStreetMap records a capacity of 25,700 and a start date of 1886. The ground itself is not listed. Two structures within it are, both Grade II: the grandstand and turnstiles, NHLE 1079754, and the office to the south of the grandstand, NHLE 1358582. Those are the two National Heritage List entries within 250 metres of the stadium centre. The council operates event-day parking restrictions in zones T, X and Y on match and event days.

The borough's eastern edge runs against Kensington, and two of the names on it belong to Hammersmith and Fulham despite sounding as though they do not. Olympia London on Hammersmith Road carries a W14 postcode and is served by a station called Kensington (Olympia), and the site stands in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Its designations come at two grades and must not be flattened into one: the Grand Hall and Pillar Hall are listed Grade II*, NHLE 1096048, while Olympia National and Olympia Central are listed Grade II, NHLE 1456674, and the Olympia Garage Grade II, NHLE 1457494. The site is mid-redevelopment and markets new spaces alongside the historic halls, among them a music venue branded British Airways ARC and an outdoor space called The Square. Programming for 2026 spans consumer fairs including the Spirit of Christmas Fair and The Ideal Christmas Show, trade events including the PLASA Show, Top Drawer, Big Data LDN and the International Security Expo, and arena-scale music from Van Morrison, Bloc Party and Interpol. A programme rather than an opening time governs a visit, so no hours are given here. Blythe House, the former Post Office Savings Bank headquarters, stands about 190 metres away and is listed Grade II, NHLE 1390961.

Stamford Bridge on Fulham Road, SW6 1HS, is the ground of Chelsea Football Club, and it too stands in Hammersmith and Fulham rather than in Kensington and Chelsea: the club's name is not its address. OpenStreetMap records a capacity of 41,837. No entry on the National Heritage List falls inside the stadium, and the nearest is the Sir Oswald Stoll Foundation southern block about 184 metres away, listed Grade II, NHLE 1457123. No source states tour or museum hours for the ground, so none are given here. Fulham Broadway Underground station on the District line is 323 metres from the stadium and 156 metres from Fulham Town Hall on TfL's measurement.

North of the Uxbridge Road the borough turns from riverside terraces to music halls, a new-writing theatre and open common. The O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire on Shepherd's Bush Green is listed Grade II, NHLE 1358593, and Wikidata records an opening date of 17 August 1903, a capacity of 2,000 and Frank Matcham as architect. A second former cinema stands 71 metres away on the same green, named on the National Heritage List as ODEON CINEMA, Grade II, NHLE 1286354, and The Grampians, Grade II, NHLE 1390753, is the other list entry within 250 metres.

The Bush Theatre is at 7 Uxbridge Road, W12 8LJ, with a box office open Monday to Saturday 4pm to 8pm and a box office telephone of 020 8743 5050. It was established in 1972 in a room above a pub on the corner of Shepherd's Bush Green, states that it moved to the old library on Uxbridge Road in 2011, and the building reopened in 2017 after a redevelopment project. No entry on the National Heritage List names the theatre or its building, though four listed entries fall within 250 metres of it: ODEON CINEMA, Grade II, NHLE 1286354, at 148 metres; the Hammersmith School of Building and Arts and Crafts, Grade II, NHLE 1358595, at 203 metres; the Church of St Stephen the Martyr and St Thomas, Grade II, NHLE 1261971, at 214 metres; and Shepherds Bush Empire, Grade II, NHLE 1358593, at 216 metres.

Wormwood Scrubs is rough open common on Scrubs Lane. OpenStreetMap relation 17097363 tags it as a park with a common-land designation sourced to the Defra 2015 common land register, and the polygon measures 67.7 hectares of rough grassland rather than formal planting; 138 of its 139 boundary nodes fall inside the borough polygon, the one exception sitting on the boundary line itself. The Scrubs carries no registered park and garden entry on the National Heritage List. The adjoining HMP Wormwood Scrubs carries three: the gatehouse, Grade II, NHLE 1393182; the chapel, Grade II, NHLE 1393205, 56 metres from it; and the cell blocks, Grade II, NHLE 1393204, at 177 metres. The gatehouse and the chapel are two of the borough's 27 Grade II* entries, and the Former Wormholt Library and Infant Welfare Centre, Grade II, NHLE 1393177, is the other list entry within 600 metres. Little Wormwood Scrubs is a separate, smaller park about 780 metres north east of the centre of the Scrubs and should not be taken for it.

Hammersmith is the borough's gateway, and it has two Underground stations of the same name 156 metres apart giving four tube lines between them: catch the District or Piccadilly line to Hammersmith (Dist&Picc Line), or the Circle or Hammersmith & City line to Hammersmith (H&C Line). From those two, the Lyric Hammersmith is 80 metres from the Circle and Hammersmith & City station and 182 metres from the District and Piccadilly one; the Eventim Apollo reverses that order, at 257 metres from the District and Piccadilly station and 384 metres from the Circle and Hammersmith & City one; Riverside Studios is 567 metres and Hammersmith Bridge 607 metres from the District and Piccadilly station. For the river terrace go one or two stops further west on the District line: Ravenscourt Park is 463 metres from Kelmscott House and 710 metres from Hammersmith Terrace, and Stamford Brook is 707 metres from Emery Walker's House.

For Fulham, take the District line to Putney Bridge. TfL measures 160 metres from there to All Saints, 177 metres to Sir William Powell's Almshouses, 540 metres to Fulham Palace and 1,064 metres to Craven Cottage, the last of these south east along the river rather than due south. Putney rail station, served by South Western Railway, is 836 metres from All Saints across Putney Bridge in Wandsworth, and Parsons Green on the District line serves the eastern edge of Fulham. The council notes that bus routes 14, 22, 74, 220, 424, 430, DL-4 and DL-5 stop at Putney Bridge next to Bishop's Park.

For Olympia, the District line station called Kensington (Olympia) is 181 metres away and the rail station beside it 213 metres, served by the Mildmay line of the London Overground and by Southern. West Kensington on the District line is 659 metres and Barons Court on the District and Piccadilly lines 676 metres. Fulham Broadway on the District line is the stop for Stamford Bridge at 323 metres.

For Shepherd's Bush, the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines get closest: Goldhawk Road is 218 metres from the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire and 354 metres from the Bush Theatre, and Shepherd's Bush Market is 115 metres from the Bush Theatre and 331 metres from the Empire. Shepherd's Bush on the Central line is 391 metres from the Empire and 434 metres from the Bush Theatre, Shepherds Bush rail station, on the Mildmay line of the London Overground and served by Southern, 510 metres from the Bush Theatre, Wood Lane on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines 521 metres, and White City on the Central line 776 metres. For Wormwood Scrubs, take the Central line to East Acton, 507 metres from the prison gatehouse, against 1,177 metres from White City.
