Havering-atte-Bower Village Green, Stocks and Whipping Post

The stocks and whipping post were listed on 4 July 1952 as list entry 1079930, and Havering Council names them among the borough's historic buildings as 'Stocks, Havering-atte-Bower'. Facing the green, the Church of St John the Evangelist was built in 1878 to replace an older chapel of St Mary and is listed Grade II, NHLE 1183663, first listed on 4 July 1952 and amended on 14 September 1979. About 400 m south on Orange Tree Hill, the Bower House was built in 1729 by John Baynes using materials from the demolished Havering Palace and is listed Grade I, NHLE 1079873, with its stable block separately Grade I, NHLE 1079874; the Round House on the same ridge is Grade II*, NHLE 1183562. The Royal Liberty of Havering, a self-governing jurisdiction covering the parishes of Havering-atte-Bower, Hornchurch and Romford, ran from 1465 to 1892. Havering Palace was used by royalty into the seventeenth century, and the surviving plan of it comes from a survey ordered by Lord Burghley in 1578.
