Hermon Mountain

Per New England Ski History's Hermon Mountain page, the area "likely dates back to 1964," when Albert Jackson acquired a tract of land, and "likely" debuted just before Christmas of 1964 with a rope tow, a heated lodge, and a ski rental shop. "On November 10, 1976, Jackson's Mt. Hermon Ski Area sold the property to Hermon Mountain Ski Area," then owned by Terry and Pamela Duran. Organized as Hermon Slope, a group of six locals acquired the area from the Durans on March 12, 1984. Bill and Marlene Whitcomb formed New Hermon Mountain, Inc. in late 1988, formally acquiring the ski area on November 21, 1989. Founder Albert Jackson "passed away on June 25, 1994 at the age of 68." A refurbished double chairlift was installed for the 1998-99 season, and a tubing operation was added for the 2002-2003 season. A NewEnglandSkiIndustry.com article published May 8, 2026 reported that Hermon Mountain Holdings, LLC acquired the ski area from Bill and Marlene Whitcomb on April 29, 2026, with a $1.24 million mortgage issued by Acadia Federal Credit Union, noting the Whitcombs had operated the area "for three decades" before placing it on the market in 2022. The new ownership group — Timothy and Amy McClary and David and Casee Hart — wrote in a Facebook post quoted by the same article: "When we reopen, the goal is simple. We are committed to preserving the welcoming, family friendly atmosphere the community knows and loves. We want to be a place where you can grab a pizza, hang out, play some games, catch trivia or a comedy show, and just relax after a long week with friends and family." Of the outgoing Whitcomb ownership, the same post added, "This mountain means a lot to a lot of people, and we're incredibly grateful not just for what they created, but for the time, support, and guidance they gave us throughout this process and they continue to provide us with." As accessed in September 2026, the ski area's own website still described itself under its pre-sale name: "New Hermon Mountain Inc. is a small, family oriented ski area in Hermon, Maine. We've operated as a family-owned skiing facility for three decades."
