King Pine Ski Area

In 1938, Milt Hoyt cleared trees from a hill near the family's inn and constructed a rope tow powered by a Ford Model A engine, a precursor to the later ski area, per Purity Spring Resort's own account of its history. King Pine took its name from two large pine trees on the property that bore the mark of King George, according to the same source. Nicholas Hoyt, a Brooklyn attorney who returned with his wife Martha Hood to his birthplace in East Madison, began taking in carriage guests at the family home to supplement their income, founding the inn that preceded both Purity Spring Resort and King Pine. The Hoyt family formally opened King Pine Ski Area with three trails in 1962. In 1965, Milt Hoyt subdivided mountain land for house lots, and the King Pine Area Association (KPAA) was formed. In 1968, a second double chairlift was added to the back side of the mountain. In 1987, King Pine celebrated its 25th anniversary with an expanded base lodge and new snowmaking, per Purity Spring Resort's own account. In 2006, a Black Bear triple chairlift was added, the same year The Bluffs RV resort opened as another Hoyt family property. "In 2021, Purity Spring Resort joined the Highway West Vacations family, and a new chapter of Purity Lake's story began," according to the resort's own account of its history. King Pine Ski Area describes itself on its own website as "A Hoyt Family Business," one of several properties listed under the "Hoyt Family of Businesses" alongside Purity Spring Resort, Danforth Bay Camping & RV Resort, The Bluffs RV Resort, and Camp Tohkomeupog.
