London Museum Docklands occupies No. 1 Warehouse on West India Quay, a Georgian 'low' sugar warehouse of 1802 built for the West India Docks. Entry is free and it opens daily 10am to 5pm. The warehouses and general offices at the western end of North Quay are Grade I, NHLE 1242440, listed on 19 July 1950, and the building stands in the West India Dock conservation area. It has twelve galleries plus the Mudlarks children's gallery over two floors, covering 400 years of the river and the port.
History
The museum opened in 2003 in a rare survivor of the old docks. 'London, Sugar and Slavery', a £14 million permanent gallery funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, opened in 2007 to mark the bicentenary of the Slave Trade Act 1807. The quay walls, copings and buttresses to the Import and Export Docks are Grade I in their own right, NHLE 1065783, and Blackwall Basin is Grade I, NHLE 1242449. The National Heritage List for England records 911 listed-building entries inside the Tower Hamlets borough boundary as mapped by OpenStreetMap relation 51805, of which 21 are Grade I, and this warehouse is one of those 21.
