Monumento a Cola di Rienzo
Historic site · Campitelli, Italy
A statue in the planted area on the left flank of the Cordonata. The Sovrintendenza Capitolina gives the statue to Girolamo Masini (1840-1885) and the base to Francesco Azzurri (1827-1901), and dates the work "1871 realizzazione statua; 1886-1887 realizzazione monumento", in bronze, marble and brick facing.
History
The Sovrintendenza records that the city council authorised the purchase in 1886, that the base reuses ancient marble reliefs partly taken from the Ara Coeli staircase, that the monument was unveiled without ceremony on 20 September 1887, and that it carries no dedicatory inscription beyond "Cola de Rienzi" cut into the bronze.
