A cemetery in Maspeth, planned in 1850 and reaching 71 acres after an 1878 purchase. It was originally established as an Episcopal cemetery; that restriction was lifted in 1851, and its type is recorded as non-sectarian.
History
The land was acquired from George Fash and the estate of James Waterbury. Former U.S. Congressman James Maurice was one of the cemetery's founders and is interred here, along with Georges V. Matchabelli, Helena Rubinstein and Legs Diamond. NYC Parks refers to the cemetery in three of its Maspeth sign texts as Lutheran, which the cemetery's own record contradicts: it was Episcopal and then non-sectarian.
