The Museum of the Order of St John occupies the ground floor of St John's Gate, which is Grade I listed, NHLE 1208827, and dated to 1504. The galleries and shop open Wednesday to Saturday, 9.30am to 5pm, and the museum states that 'Visits to the Museum galleries and shop are free of charge to all. Donations are welcomed.' Three guided tours are offered: 'The Lost Priory of the Medieval Order of St John' and 'St John Ambulance: A Victorian Masterpiece', both 45 minutes, and 'Knights, Revellers & Saviours: The Many Lives of St John's Gate', 60 minutes. Tours are £15 per person, £11.25 with an Art Pass or Blue Light Card, free for St John Ambulance staff and volunteers, and £1 for Islington residents.
History
The gate was built for the Knights Hospitaller and is dated to 1504. The museum has been awarded £413,015 from Arts Council England's Museum Estate and Development Fund to repair and renew the roofs of St John's Gate, and states that it will remain open throughout the work.
