New Utrecht Reformed Church Cemetery and Liberty Pole

Historic site · Bensonhurst, New York

The burial ground adjoining the church, consecrated in 1654, with about 1,300 people interred in it. It holds the Liberty Pole, the sixth on the site of the present church, raised in 1783 at the end of the Revolutionary War to harass departing British troops.

History

The cemetery is covered by the church complex's New York City landmark designation of March 15, 1966, extended on January 13, 1998, and by the 2001 boundary increase to its National Register listing.
