Terme del Foro di Ostia

Historic site · Ostia Antica, Italy

The public baths beside the Forum, with an octagonal heliocaminus, a laconicum and a suite of warm and hot rooms all turned south for the sun. The latrine and the palestra beside them are part of the same complex.

History

Built about 160 AD by Marco Gavio Massimo, praetorian prefect of Antoninus Pius. The building was remodelled substantially in the fourth and fifth centuries, when a monumental entrance was opened on Via della Forica.
