Thermopolium di Via di Diana
Historic site · Ostia Antica, Italy
A Roman bar on Via di Diana, with a marble serving counter, shelves, washing basins and still-life paintings above the shelves advertising what was served. Behind it is a courtyard with a small fountain and masonry benches for eating outside.
History
Carved in the third century AD out of a Hadrianic block. Three entrances open on the street, with seats under segmental-arched balconies carried on corbels, and the kitchen has a dolium sunk in the floor to keep food cool.
