Chiesa di San Francesco Saverio alla Garbatella

Historic site · Ostiense, Italy

Garbatella's parish church on piazza Damiano Sauli, by Alberto Calza Bini, with a brick and travertine facade, a central portal under a large lunette window, the arms of Pius XI above and a high dome. Inside are three aisles on Ionic columns and a transept, an apse canvas of the saint preaching, a Madonna del Divino Amore succouring Rome after the 1943 bombing, a Christ in glory with angels, and a bronze Crucifixion and Madonna flanking the entrance.

History

ArchiDiAP dates the building to 1931-1933, and Pius XI erected the parish on 1 May 1933 by the constitution Quo omnes sacrorum. John Paul II came to the parish on 3 December 1978 and told the congregation: «E una grande gioia per me poter visitare come prima parrocchia romana proprio la vostra … negli anni dell'immediato dopoguerra, come studente a Roma, mi recavo quasi ogni domenica proprio alla Garbatella, per aiutare nel servizio pastorale.»
