Palazzo delle Congregazioni ai Propilei

Historic site · Borgo, Italy

Twin modernist buildings flanking the end of via della Conciliazione, built at the end of the 1930s alongside the design of the street and named for their position by the colonnade's propylaea. Italian Wikipedia puts the dicasteries for the causes of saints, divine worship, legislative texts and bishops in the Edificio Nord at number 10, and those for clergy, institutes of consecrated life and culture in the Edificio Sud at number 3, which also holds the Holy See Press Office, entrance at via della Conciliazione 54.

History

Under the Lateran Treaty of 11 February 1929, Italy recognises the Holy See's full ownership of this property (Art. 13; Annex II). Art. 15 states that the property, «benché facenti parte del territorio dello Stato italiano» — although forming part of the territory of the Italian State — enjoys the immunities that international law grants to the headquarters of the diplomatic agents of foreign States. It is on Italian soil and visitors are subject to Italian law. The Holy See's enumeration names it as «il Palazzo delle Congregazioni ai Propilei». One piece of noise to disregard: Italian Wikipedia's infobox for the building carries both an Italian and a Vatican country field. That is an editing artefact, not a sovereignty claim — the Holy See's own list treats the building as an extraterritorial property standing on Italian soil.
