Palazzo Maffei Marescotti

Palazzo Maffei Marescotti stands on the corner of via dei Cestari and via della Pigna, adjoining the church of the Santissime Stimmate di San Francesco. The Holy See's own published list of its extraterritorial properties in Rome includes il Palazzo Maffei o del Vicariato, noting that it was formerly the seat of the diocesan Curia of Rome and that the Curia still has some offices there. Extraterritoriality is the immunity international law grants to the headquarters of a foreign state's diplomatic agents. The building stands on Italian soil, it is not part of Vatican City, it is not a border, and a visitor there is under Italian law.

History

it.wikipedia records that Giacomo della Porta designed the palazzo in 1580 for Cardinal Marcantonio Maffei, who died in 1583 leaving it unfinished; that it passed through Camilla Peretti, a Sannesio, Cardinal Ludovisi in 1621, Francesco II d'Este in 1668 and an Acciaiuoli in 1714 to the Marescotti in 1764, who had Ferdinando Fuga enlarge it; and that it was sold to the Banca Romana in 1865 and bought by the Holy See in 1906, which made it the seat of the Vicariate of Rome until the Vicariate moved to the Palazzo di San Callisto in 1964.
