Pantheon

Historic site · Pigna, Italy

The Roman temple that is now the basilica of Santa Maria ad Martyres. It stands in Pigna, although the square it faces does not. Its own site gives daily opening of 09.00 to 19.00, last entry 18.30, closed on 1 January and 25 December. Entry has been paid since 3 July 2023 and is free on the first Sunday of the month.

History

The Pantheon's own account says that Agrippa built the temple in 27 BC and dedicated it to the seven planetary divinities, from which the name Pantheon, of all the gods; that the original building was smaller; and that Hadrian rebuilt it between 118 and 125 AD. The same account records that Raphael chose the Pantheon as his burial place.
