Piazza di Spagna

Attraction · Campo Marzio, Italy

The square from which the Spanish Steps climb, with the Fontana della Barcaccia in it and the Colonna dell'Immacolata on piazza Mignanelli. Seen from above, it.wikipedia describes it as two triangles meeting at a point, in the shape of a butterfly's wings.

History

Roma Capitale records that the square was already commercially important in the fifteenth century, for the number of inns and of houses lived in by foreigners, drawn here by the Spanish and French government missions. it.wikipedia records that the square takes its name from the Palazzo di Spagna, seat of the Spanish embassy to the Holy See from 1622. Palazzo di Propaganda Fide fronts the square but stands in rione Colonna.
