The classical sculpture museum of the Vatican Museums, in and beside the Belvedere Palace of Innocent VIII, on the museum itinerary and covered by the Museums ticket.
History
The nucleus is the collection of Julius II, 1503 to 1513, in the Cortile delle Statue, today the Octagonal Court. The museum is named for Clement XIV Ganganelli, 1769 to 1774, and Pius VI Braschi, 1775 to 1799, and its neo-classical architecture is the work of Alessandro Dori, Michelangelo Simonetti and Giuseppe Camporese. Principal works went to Paris under the Treaty of Tolentino of 1797 and most were recovered after the Congress of Vienna of 1815, through the diplomacy of Antonio Canova.
