Dunes at Plumb Beach

A federally managed shoreline unit of Gateway National Recreation Area's Jamaica Bay Unit, co-managed by the National Park Service and NYC Parks. It has a parking lot, restrooms and a kayak launch, is used for windsurfing and kiteboarding, and is open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is not a designated swimming beach.

History

The National Park Service assumed control in 1972, when the site was incorporated into the newly created Gateway National Recreation Area. Its shoreline, tidal mudflat, low saltmarsh, tidal lagoon, dune system and woodland thickets at the entrance to Gerritsen Creek make it important horseshoe-crab habitat, with the crabs coming ashore in May and June.
