Venerabile Collegio Inglese
Historic site · Regola, Italy
The English seminary in Rome, adjoining its church of San Tommaso di Canterbury, with a summer residence at Rocca di Papa. It is a pontifical institution standing on Italian soil in Regola, and it is named in neither of the Lateran Treaty's lists of properties.
History
In 1362 an English merchant couple sold the guild of the English in Rome a house at what is now via di Monserrato 45, and the guild founded there the Ospizio inglese della Santissima Trinità e di San Tommaso. William Allen turned the hospice into a seminary in 1576; the first seminarians arrived in 1577, and Gregory XIII's foundation bull followed in 1579.
