Ponte Rotto (Ponte Emilio)
Historic site · Ripa, Italy
A single mid-stream pier standing in the Tiber, all that survives of the Pons Aemilius. It is the object Romans call Ponte Rotto, the broken bridge.
History
The Pons Aemilius crossed the Tiber upstream of the ancient Pons Sublicius. A single mid-stream pier survives. It was earlier called Ponte di S. Maria or Senatorio, and the Crescenzi levied a toll on its traffic.
