Tempio di Portuno

A small rectangular temple to Portunus, god of river harbours, also known as the Tempio della Fortuna Virile, standing in the Forum Boarium by the ancient Portus Tiberinus. High podium with steps faced in travertine slabs, four Ionic columns on the front, and two travertine columns with five Aniene-tufa half-columns on the cella walls. Turismo Roma states that the building is visible from the outside.
History
Datable to the fourth or third century BC, though the present fabric is probably of the second half of the second century with first-century-BC reworking. Byzantine-era frescoes of the life of Mary survive inside. In the ninth century it became a church, first Santa Maria de Gradellis, or de Secundicerio, and from the fifteenth century Santa Maria Egiziaca, a title it kept until 1916, when the church was deconsecrated and the ancient temple restored.
