Chiesa di San Giorgio in Velabro
Historic site · Ripa, Italy
A church on the piazzetta della Cloaca Massima, with the Arch of the Argentarii built against its flank and the so-called Arch of Janus on the same street. It lies within the parish of Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli and is a rectory entrusted to the Order of the Holy Cross. No source states its opening hours, so none are given here.
History
The result of a ninth-century enlargement of an earlier diaconal building, much altered since. It is the seat of the diaconate of San Giorgio in Velabro, whose cardinal deacons have included the future popes Boniface IX, from 1381 to 1385, and Martin V, from 1406 to 1417, and St John Henry Newman, from 1879 to 1890. Pope Gregory II, who reigned from 715 to 731, made it the station church of the Thursday after Ash Wednesday.
