Cloaca Massima

Historic site · Ripa, Italy

Rome's ancient main drain, whose outfall is the part of it that belongs to this rione. Turismo Roma records it as still functioning where it discharges on the left side of Ponte Palatino, at lungotevere Aventino.

History

Built at the end of the sixth century BC under Rome's last kings, using Etruscan vaulted-arch engineering. It runs from the Suburra by the Argiletum, the Forum, the Velabro and the Forum Boarium to the Tiber. Its arches are still visible in the Forum Boarium, the marsh ground it was dug to drain.
