Rugby Branch, Brooklyn Public Library

Historic site · Rugby, New York

The Rugby branch library on Utica Avenue

The branch opened in 1957 and is named for Rugby, the 1890s developer name for this section of East Flatbush. It closed in 2017 for renovation and reopened on a Monday in July 2021.

History

The renovation grew from an original $1 million budget to $10.2 million, delayed by funding gaps, Hurricane Sandy repairs, contracting problems and the pandemic; a mobile library trailer served patrons during the closure. The reopened branch has new heating and cooling, accessibility upgrades, a garden, a mural by the artist J. Mikal Davis, and cork and bamboo flooring.
