Saddleback Maine

Bill Berry, a Saddleback skier and condo owner, purchased the ski area from prior owner Donald Breen in 2003, per New England Ski History. In December 2012, the Berry family announced that Saddleback was for sale. In July 2015 the family announced Saddleback would close if they could not obtain financing for a new quad chairlift. Saddleback closed after the 2014-15 season and did not open for 2015-16; by December 2015 the Berry family said the area would likely reopen in January 2016 under new ownership, but despite snowmaking preparations, the area never opened that winter. On June 28, 2017, the Berry family announced they had reached an agreement to sell Saddleback to the Australia-based Majella Group, which said it planned to reopen the mountain for the 2017-18 season — an agreement to sell, not a completed sale. That sale was never completed, and Saddleback remained idle through the 2017-18 winter; the deal collapsed after Majella Group CEO Sebastian Monsour was arrested in Australia in 2018 on alleged investor fraud charges. In March 2019, the Arctaris Impact Fund made an offer to purchase Saddleback — an offer, not yet a completed purchase. On January 31, 2020, per Wikipedia's "Saddleback Maine" article, Saddleback was officially sold to Arctaris Impact Fund, completing the purchase that had been offered in March 2019. Following renovations carried out over summer 2020, Saddleback reopened to the public on December 15, 2020, per New England Ski History, having been closed since the end of the 2014-15 season. Per its own site, Arctaris Impact Investors describes its Saddleback investment as "over $42M" invested "across a four-year period" following the 2020 reopening. Saddleback's own mailing address uses the Rangeley, ME post office, but the ski area itself sits in Sandy River Plantation, a separate Franklin County municipality from the town of Rangeley — a mail-routing address, not evidence of which town the mountain stands in.
