Spruce Mountain

Ski area · Jay, Maine

A volunteer-run ski area jointly owned by the towns of Jay, Livermore, and Livermore Falls, operating since 1956.

History

Per New England Ski History, the Spruce Mountain Ski Club began in 1956 when "a group of Livermore Falls skiers obtained permission from Eben Farrington, Carl Wright, and Everett Wright to develop a ski area off Spruce Mountain Road in North Jay." The club "was registered as a non-profit in December of 1956," operating with "a rope tow acquired from Augusta." "In the interest of having a more convenient location, the ski area was moved to a location just outside of Livermore Falls in 1959," with landowners Alex and Pauline providing land and a barn in exchange for a lease payment covering their property taxes; the relocated area "likely opened during the winter of 1959-60." "In December of 1987, the town of Jay entered into a purchase agreement with the Dion family for the property," and the towns of Jay, Livermore, and Livermore Falls purchased the land and buildings for $197,000, a deal that "likely closed in 1988." For the 1991-92 season, the warming hut, snack bar, and garage facilities were upgraded, and new bathrooms were constructed. In 1995, "the towns of Jay and Livermore and numerous volunteers joined together to build a new snowmaking system." Spruce Mountain is, per its own website, "jointly owned" by the towns of Jay, Livermore, and Livermore Falls, at Spruce Mountain Road, Jay, Maine 04239. The site states, "our volunteer staff has been dedicated to providing a fun, family-friendly outdoor experience for our surrounding community and beyond through winter outdoor recreation," and describes itself as proud "to provide family-friendly skiing on the banks of the Androscoggin River in Central Maine since 1956."
