St Augustine's Tower

St Augustine's Tower stands in St John's Church Gardens off Mare Street and opens to visitors on the last Sunday of every month except December, 2pm to 4.30pm. It is Grade I listed, NHLE 1265635, listed on 24 April 1951 as the Old Tower of Former Church of St Augustine, and it is one of the eight Grade I entries inside the Hackney borough boundary.
History
The tower is all that survives above ground of the medieval parish church of St Augustine, which stood on the site until the parish moved to the new church of St John in the 1790s. Its grid reference on the National Heritage List is TQ 34993 85007. The custodians' site dates the structure to 1275 and Wikidata records an inception of 1550; no source states which is right, so no construction date is given here.
