St George in the East

St George in the East is a Nicholas Hawksmoor church of 1714 to 1729 at 14 Cannon Street Road, with four octagonal 'pepper-pot' turrets on the roof that give it its silhouette above Cable Street. It is Grade I, NHLE 1357779, listed on 29 December 1950 as 'Church of St George in the East', and stands in the St George in the East conservation area. It is an active Anglican parish church sharing its site with the Centre for Theology and Community. No source states its opening hours, so none are given here.
History
The church was built under the 1711 Commission for Building Fifty New Churches and the first rector took office in 1729. German firebombing in May 1941 gutted the interior, but the outer walls, the west tower and the pepper-pot turrets stood. A modern church was built inside the surviving shell in 1964, with a flat constructed under each corner turret, so the ruin and the new church are one building. Its replacement bells were cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry on Whitechapel Road. It is one of three Hawksmoor churches in Tower Hamlets, with Christ Church Spitalfields and St Anne's Limehouse.
