St Mary's Church, Leyton

John Shaw rebuilt much of the church in 1822, adding the brick south aisle with the Y-tracery windows that are still its most obvious feature, and a long restoration ran from 1929 into 1935. The antiquary John Strype was curate here from 1669 and held the post for 68 years until his death in 1737. The monuments inside include one to William Bosanquet, who died in 1813, by John Flaxman, along with memorials to Sir Michael Hicks, 1543 to 1612, and his family, to Sir John Strange and to Charles Goring, 2nd Earl of Norwich. The Grade II* listing was made on 27 May 1954 as list entry 1293623 and amended on 24 February 1987, at grid reference TQ 37681 86857. Leyton Midland Road, on the Suffragette line, is 890 m away and Leyton Underground station 969 m; buses 58, 69, 97, 158 and night route N26 pass within 500 m.
