Historic England first listed the building on 2 April 1989 as NHLE 1252932 and amended the entry on 4 October 2023. The venue records that William Ford Robinson Stanley, a prominent local inventor, industrialist and philanthropist, designed and funded the halls himself; that he employed the local builder Alfred Lawrence to construct the main hall in 1902; and that the first hall opened on 2 February 1903, Stanley's birthday, at a cost to him of £13,000, with the opening performed by the local MP Lord Ritchie, Chancellor of the Exchequer. The smaller adjoining halls, the committee room, the kitchen and the clock tower date from 1904, and the Stanley Art Club and its gallery from 1908.
