History
Before the construction of Stow Lake, Strawberry Hill was known as The Island because it was a vegetated hill in a sea of sand, and a carriage road traversed up its side. The ruin of the Sweeney Observatory stands on it: a two-story circular stone structure for viewing, built in 1891 with funds donated by Thomas U. Sweeney, destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and never rebuilt, of which the circular concrete foundation and a few of the building stones remain.
