Sutro Heights Park

In 1885 Adolph Sutro created the park as a formal public garden, with flower beds, forests, wide walkways, hedge mazes and parterres, and imported over 200 concrete replicas of Greek and Roman statuary from Belgium; the reclining lions at the main gate are reproductions of the originals. He kept a full-time staff of seventeen: ten gardeners, a tree man, a coachman, driver, gatekeeper, machinist and helper, and a road maker. There were a glass-paned conservatory and garden sheds. Two octagonal wood-frame gatekeepers' houses were built around 1885 and 1886, one at the main gate and one at the lower gate, clad in horizontal tongue-in-groove siding, with pointed roofs and metal weathervanes in the shape of roosters.
