Swakeleys House stands on The Avenue, Ickenham, UB10 8NR, and is listed Grade I as NHLE 1080295; the outbuildings to the north carry their own Grade I entry, NHLE 1286571, so two of the borough's nine Grade I entries stand in one garden. The house is in use as offices and opens in part once a year for Open House London, so there is no walk-up interior access; the surrounding Swakeleys Park is public open space.
History
The house was built between 1629 and 1638 for Sir Edmund Wright, Lord Mayor of London in 1640, in the Artisan Mannerist style. Samuel Pepys visited twice in 1665 to collect money from Sir Robert Vyner, calling the design "the most uniforme" and the place "a very pleasant place". The Foreign & Commonwealth Office Sports Association held it from 1927 to 1955 and the London Postal Region Sports Club from 1955; CES Properties owns it now and obtained permission in 2014 for conversion to a single house. The Grade I listing was made on 1 May 1956 as list entry 1080295, and the outbuildings were listed on 6 September 1974 as NHLE 1286571. Ickenham Underground station is 638 m away and Hillingdon 704 m, both on the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines.
