Syon House and Syon Park

The Grade I listing was made on 15 June 1951 as list entry 1080318. The site was Syon Abbey, a Bridgettine monastery founded by Henry V in 1415, which moved to this site in 1431 and was dissolved in 1539. The exterior was erected in 1547 for the 1st Duke of Somerset, and the estate has been in the Percy family since 1594 as the London residence of the Duke of Northumberland. Robert Adam began the interiors in 1762, and five state rooms on the west, south and east were finished before work stopped in 1769; the central rotunda he intended was never built, and the Long Gallery runs 136 feet. Capability Brown laid out the park and lake from 1760, and the operator gives the park as 200 acres (80 hectares) holding more than 200 species of rare tree. Charles Fowler's Great Conservatory, of metal and glass, was completed in 1827 and was listed Grade I on 15 June 1951 as list entry 1358328.
