The Butler's Retreat

It takes its name from John Butler, who occupied it in 1891, and Wikipedia describes it as one of the few remaining Victorian retreats within the forest. The Grade II listing was made on 30 October 1986 as list entry 1065599, at grid reference TQ 39790 94780; the entry describes a 'Detached house. Probably early C19. Timber framed, weatherboarded, on brick base' and includes it for group value. It stands about 70 m from Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge — the two grid references, TQ 39790 94780 and TQ 39724 94776, are 66 m apart — and the Corporation notes that a resin bonded path leads from the Lodge to it. Chingford station, the northern terminus of the Weaver line, is 501 m from the neighbouring Hunting Lodge, and buses 97, 179, 212, 397, 444 and night route N26 serve Rangers Road.
