Tottenham High Cross

The amended list description reads: 'Circa 1600 brick structure replacing an earlier wooden cross. Covered with stucco in 1809 and subsequently given Gothic decoration of the same material.' The entry states explicitly that its origins are obscure and that it 'does not have any apparent connection with crosses set up by Edward I in memory of Queen Eleanor' — the confusion with the Eleanor cross at Waltham Cross is common and wrong. It marks the historic centre of Tottenham village on the line of Ermine Street, the Roman road that the High Road still follows, and it stands in Haringey's Tottenham Green conservation area, designated 26 March 1976.
