Upminster Tithe Barn Museum of Nostalgia

The barn was scheduled on 5 November 1971 as list entry 1001991, under the name 'Medieval grange barn, 228m south-east of Upminster Court'. The museum states that 'The Barn dates from 1450 and was part of an estate that supported the Abbey of Waltham. The Abbott's hunting lodge next door was later converted to a private house and is now home to Upminster Golf Club.' That lodge is Upminster Hall, Grade II*, NHLE 1079889. The box frame is English oak: 20 main aisle or arcade posts, 20 wall posts and 6 end-frame posts, with ten 20-foot tie beams spanning the nave and twenty 10-foot aisle tie beams, jointed with tenons and wooden trenails. The roof is thatched — re-thatched in natural Norfolk reed in 1965, burnt in the centre by fire in 1973 and repaired in 1975 — and both gable ends are half-hipped; brown long-eared bats and pipistrelles live in the thatch. The barn was refurbished and opened as an agricultural museum in 1976 and holds domestic items from the last century alongside agricultural machinery. Bus 248 towards Cranham passes the top of the drive, about one mile from Upminster station.
