W Martyn

Queens Parade opened in August 1897, built by the developer James Edmundson at the start of Muswell Hill's development, and W Martyn has traded on the site since then and is still owned and run by the Martyn family; the firm appears at No. 12 Queens Parade in the 1899 Kelly's Directory of Middlesex. The shopfront covered by NHLE 1393627 has two plate-glass windows in narrow white metal frames above low black Vitrolite stallrisers, a white mosaic lobby floor carrying the shop's name, and a black Vitrolite fascia with W. MARTYN in crimson raised block capitals. Inside, mahogany shelving with moulded tops, candy-twist columns and fluted pilasters runs round three walls, with semi-circular metal storage bins with hinged wooden lids behind the counter.
