Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is at 20 Dean's Yard, SW1P 3PA, and is listed Grade I as NHLE 1291494 under the name Westminster Abbey (The Collegiate Church of St Peter). General Admittance runs 9.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturday; there is no General Admittance slot on Sunday, when St Margaret's Church opens 11am to 2pm, the Cellarium 9am to 3pm, the Kiosk 10am to 5pm and the Shop 9.30am to 4.30pm. Admission in the operator's 17 June to 24 June and 2 September to 30 September 2026 band is £31 for an adult, £28 for a visitor aged 65 and over, £28 for a student, £14 for a child aged 6 to 17 and free under 5, and covers the cloisters, College Garden, Chapter House and Pyx Chamber.

History

The abbey has been the coronation church since 1066 and is the resting place of 17 monarchs. The church standing today was begun by Henry III in 1245; the West Towers were completed in 1745 in Portland stone to a design by Nicholas Hawksmoor, and the most recent major restoration ran from 1973 to 1995. Three designations of three types cover the fabric: the Grade I listing, NHLE 1291494; the World Heritage Site 'Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and St Margaret's Church', NHLE 1000095, inscribed in 1987, which carries no grade; and the scheduled monument covering the Chapter House and Pyx Chamber in the cloisters, NHLE 1003579, which carries no grade either. The Great Cloisters, including St Faith's Chapel, the Chapter House, the Parlour and the Dormitory, are covered by a further Grade I listing, NHLE 1066370.
