Wilton's Music Hall

The premises were known from about 1826 as the Mahogany Bar, reputedly because the landlord installed a mahogany bar before anyone else in the area. John Wilton took the business over around 1850 and built his Magnificent New Music Hall behind the pub in 1859, to a design by Jacob Maggs; the hall occupies the back of a terrace of three 18th-century houses plus the pub. Fire destroyed it in 1877 and it was rebuilt to designs by J. Buckley Wilson. The East End Mission of the Methodist Church bought it and ran it as a mission hall until 1956. It spent about twenty years on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register; the second phase of restoration cost roughly £2.6 million and the restored spaces reopened in October 2015.
