Alexandra Palace

The palace opened on 24 May 1873 and was destroyed by fire sixteen days later. It was rebuilt to the designs of John Johnson and Alfred Meeson, whom the list entry names, and reopened on 1 May 1875: cast-iron and steel columns, walls of white Huntingdon and yellow stock brick in the Italianate style, and Portland cement ornament. The tower at the south-east corner was adapted in 1935 to house offices and studios for the BBC, with a tall steel latticed girder mast added on top, and the BBC began regular public high-definition television broadcasts from Studios A and B in November 1936. The list entry, NHLE 1268256, was made on 1 October 1996 and amended on 30 January 2012, and names the surviving areas of principal interest as the theatre auditorium in the north east and the television studios in the BBC wing in the south-east corner. The building is run by the Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust, registered charity no. 281991. The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded Round 2 major grant funding in March 2015; Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios designed the East Wing Restoration Project with Willmott Dixon as contractor, and the theatre reopened to the public on 1 December 2018.
