Anthony Catanzaro Square

Historic site · Bath Beach, New York

A small Greenstreets memorial triangle that the New York City Council designated in 1963 to honor Private First Class Anthony Catanzaro, 1916 to 1943, killed in the Second World War.

History

Catanzaro's ship was torpedoed on November 26, 1943 en route to the Italian front, and he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His younger brother Joseph, who survived the June 6, 1944 landings in Normandy, had a flagpole installed and shrubs planted here.
