Catacombe di San Sebastiano

A hypogeum cemetery on the via Appia Antica, under the basilica of the same name. There are three levels of galleries; of four original levels the first is almost entirely destroyed. The piazzola, a former open-cast quarry, holds three mausolea cut into its walls, one of them the mausoleo degli Innocentiores. Above the infilled piazzola stands the triclia, a roofed colonnaded hall for funerary banquets whose walls carry more than 600 graffiti invoking Peter and Paul, together with a marble-lined edicola. Three martyrs are documented here: Sebastian, the Pannonian bishop Quirinus, and Eutychius. Open Tuesday to Sunday 09:15 to 17:15, last entry 16:45. Closed on Mondays, on 25 December, 1 January and Easter Day, and from 7 to 27 December 2026. Tickets 10 euro full, 7 euro reduced. Visits are led by an in-house guide, in Italian, English, French, Spanish and German, and booking is advised.
